Background
Due to a growing student population at UC Merced, an adjacent building must be provided by the existing Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center. Located in the Lake View Neighborhood, the UC Merced Recreation Center North building consists of two stories that are shared with the J.E. Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center and provide an extension of the existing facility with a weight room, cardio gym, multipurpose spaces, athletic training, coach offices, conference spaces, etc.
The existing Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center opened in late 2006 and promoted physical fitness, well being and health education. The building offered students a gymnasium, student health and wellness center, weight training room, locker room, lobby and reception area, and small administrative office suite.
